On March 5 1788, David Murray of Bedeque got a marriage licence to marry Nancy, or Anne Penman of Richmond Bay. However, he was too late - as Lucy Maud Montgomery tells the story, Donald Montgomery got him drunk, then stole his cart and horse and made his way to Penman's Point to propose to Nancy. On March 14, Donald Montgomery married Anne Penman.

David finally arrived at the Penman's farm, and found Donald and Nancy gone visiting. Betsey, according to LMM, told him not to be a great fool - she would take him gladly. David then got a license to marry Nancy's sister Elizabeth Penman of Richmond Bay, Lot 13 on March 25 1788. It was a Montgomery family tradition that "they were the happiest couple that ever lived."

This story was used by their descendant, Lucy Maud Montgomery in one of her stories. A short history of Bedeque in the Guardian by F. A. McArthur got the wrong sister.
