My Family Tree

Alexander was not in the PEI Baptismal Index, but he was living in the household of John and Agnes McDonald in Charlottetown in the 1881 census. He emigrated to the United States about 1882. He married Christine McLeod from Cape Breton, giving his parents as John McDonald and Agnes Humphrey on the marriage record.

He became a US citizen in 1890 in Massachusetts.

From census records, Alexander and Christine were living in New York in 1900 with children Christine (11, Mass), John (8, b. Mass); Bertha (6, b. Mass), Frank (4, New York), and May (1, NY). They had been married for 12 years and had had 6 children, 5 living. Also with the family was Mary McLeod, single, a sister-in-law. Alexander had an awning business. At least one, perhaps two, of his brothers also went to the States and worked in awnings as well.

In 1905, the family was living in Brooklyn, New York. The household included: Alexander Macdonald 40; Christine Macdonald 39; Christina Macdonald 16, a book-keeper; John Macdonald 14, office boy for a lawyer; Bertha Macdonald 10, Frank Macdonald 8, May Macdonald 6, Jeannette Macdonald 4, Norman A Macdonald 1 and Collenna Mcloud 25, a cousin.

In 1910 with children Christine (20, b. Canada); John A. (18), Bertha (16), Frank (14), Mary C. (10, NY), Jeanette (8, NY), Norman (6, NY) and Martha J. (6, NY). Since Martha was not in the 1905 NY census, I assume she was a year younger than Norman. Alexander and Christine had been married for 22 years, and had had 8 children, 7 living.

I was unable to find them in the 1915 New York census. By 1920, the family had moved to Los Angeles.

1920 US census: Alexander Macdonald 56, Christine Macdonald 57, and 5 of their children, all listed as having been born in New York: Frank H Macdonald 24, Mary C Macdonald 20, Jeanette V Macdonald 17, Norman A Macdonald 16 and Jean M Macdonald 15. Alexander gave his business as awnings. The family was living at 1520 Marsden.

In the 1940 census, Alexander and Christina had two daughters living at home, both b. Massachusetts: Bertha Knight, divorced, age 45 and Christine East, age 51, married.
