Narrative

I am making the assumption that John married on the Island. No marriage record has been found.

In the petition that Joseph Moreshed made to the courts about the will of John Ashton, he said in a statement that his wife Sarah was the daughter of Elizabeth Morrell and John Ashton, but in the estate papers, Elizabeth Morrell claimed that her daughter Mary Jane was the only legitimate daughter of John Ashton.

There was only one John Ashton in Lot 10 in 1861; he was probably the member of the family over 60, and born in England. The young people in the household were a boy under 5 and 2 girls between 5-15. The older woman was between 45-60; two people were married, and 3 were single. Note that in 1861, Elizabeth Morrell was only 27.

John never mentions a wife by name in the will he wrote in 1867, two years before he married Elizabeth Morrell. He made the request that his son John provide a home to his mother. In 1867, John may have chosen his words carefully, knowing he had a wife who still could be alive in England.

I am assuming that John's wife was born around 1820, which would make her in her thirties when her three chidren were born.

In the 1891 census, both John Ashton Jr and Sarah Ashton Moreshead said that their father was born in England and their mother on the Island.
