My Family Tree

According to census records, William was born on April 16 1866. He was the son of William Paynter and Matilda Mann. His middle name could have been Breadwood or Braidwood, a family name. He was living with his parents in the 1881 census (William Bedford Paytester).

William Paynter, from New London, and Rebecca Brown Cousins, a widow, were married by Rev. C. W. Hamilson a Methodist minister in Margate in 1888.

Rebecca is mentioned in the family history of the Cousins family in the Irishtown/Burlington local history, and in one other local history as the wife of William Paynter.

Their children Harry and Carrie were baptized in January 1893 in Kensington, but their place of birth is not recorded. In 1900, Rebecca's daughter Alma Cousins, from her first marriage, was in Massachusetts with an aunt.

In the 1901 census, William Paynter was living with his children, Harry (Harry Wellington, born 1889) and Carrie (Carrie Rebecca, b. 1892) . Also in the household were his parents and his unmarried sisters, Rosella and Eva.

William died in 1919, according to his gravestone. He left the farm to his son Harry, and a sum of money to his married daughter Carrie. He left bequests to his two unmarried sisters, Rose Ellen and Annie E., as well as the house that they were living in.

There is another William Paynter in this area - William John Paynter, who married Margaret Catherine McKay.
