Notes

Note

In the History of the Ellis Family, Mary Ann Ellis' husband was John Reynolds.

Church of England records for Richmond parish start around 1823, and it is assumed that Mary Ann was married just before the start of these records.

Children listed in the Ellis history were: James, Agnes, Mary Jane, Elizabeth, and Annie.

There are baptismal records for the children of Mary Ann Ellis and William Randall/Randle/Reynolds in the PEI Baptismal Index: Sarah (1824), Mary Jane (1826), John (1828), Anna (1831), and Eliza (1832). Son James (1834) was the son of "James" Reynolds and Mary Ann Ellis, and Agnes's baptismal record said she was the daughter of William Randall and Agnes Ellis (1836). Since the minister made similar mistakes with other families, and since it was difficult to see how Mary Ann could have had another marriage before her husband died, it seems likely that the minister got mixed up with all of the Ellis children and grandchildren that he baptized and married.

Some family trees add another daughter Frances, and there was a marriage between a Frances Kendle or Rendle in Port Hill, to Hugh McLean. The church record looks like Rendle, and the marriage bond says Rendles, but the newspaper says Kendle.

The Islander – Jun 19, 1857 Married. At St. James’s Church, Port Hill, on Wednesday, June 10th, by the Rev. H.B. Swabey, Mr. Hugh McLean, to Frances, fourth daughter of the late Mr. John Kendle, of New Bideford.

No other marriage(s) for Mary Ann were found in the PEI Marriage Registers, or in the St. Eleanor's Church of England records.

There is only one household in the 1841 census that is close: William Reynolds, in Lot 12, a ship carpenter. He had a household of 8: a man and a woman between 16-45, and 3 males under 16 and 5 females under 16. Two were born in England, and 8 on the Island; all were Church of England.

Mary Jane died in 1850. She was buried 11 December 1850 in the St. James Church of England cemetery in Port Hill, as the wife of Rendle of Bideford, Lot 12.

John Rendle petitioned the courts to administer the estate of his late father, William Rendle, a farmer in Lot 12, who died on 28 November last (letter dated December 1853 - did he mean November 1852 or 1853?). William had 3 sons, of whom the petitioner John was the eldest and 5 daughters, but no wife surviving.

She is not the same person as Mary Jane (Frame), wife of John Rendle of Southport who died in 1869 at the age of 32.
