Abraham Wiggins Maxfield was the son of Richard Maxfield and Eliza
Jane Parrott, who left Prince Edward Island with two other brothers, William and John Ellison and their families in 1850 bound for Utah to join other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter­day Saints.

Abraham Wiggins Maxfield established Rifle, Colorado, being the postmaster and running a hotel. From the 1880 census, it looks like he was a widower with children when he married Flora.
