At the time, Charles was a police constable. He was awarded the Military Medal.

Charles brought his bride, Annette, back to Canada after the war.

When he returned to Winnipeg after the war he rejoined the police force. Charles was shot while on duty in 1936, during an attempted robery.
He was survived by his wife Annette and two children, George aged 15 and Eleanor aged 13.
