Amos was a ship carpenter up to at least 1905 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was boarding at various addresses, which might be why he isn't showing up on census records.

In 1883, he was a ship carpenter, living with his mother at 339 Columbus Ave in New Haven.

Amos MacDonald of 98 Frank Street died at the New Haven hospital yesterday. He leaves a sister, Mrs A. J. Bennett of 39 Ward St. Morning Journal Courier, 16 November 1905 pg 3
