Note

Melvina's date and place of birth, and the names of her parents, came from her obituary. She first appears in the US 1880 census, age 16, born 1864 in Canada. She was living with her father and his second wife and her brothers Phineus, Alva and William J.

Melvina did not marry her uncle Mathias, as some family trees propose, but she may have been named after his wife Malvina Strang, which led to the initial confusion. At some time, Melvina and her brother Phineus moved out west, to Washington State, where they both married - Melvina to Edward Lacey, and her brother Phineus to Edward's sister Lizzy.

Melvina, her husband Edward Lacey and daughter can be found in the 1892 Washington census, but by 1900 they were back in Massachusetts, where Edward had found work in a cemetery. Their two daughters, aged 8 and 6, had been born in Washington, but their son Frederick, age 2, was born in Massachusetts.
