Notes

Note

Charles Humphrey was born in Scotland in 1802, the son of James and Janet (Lamont) Humphrey and died in Prince Edward Island in 1869 at the age of 67. He was a stonemason by trade, and it is said that he laid out the stone work on the Colonial building in Charlottetown.

Charles Humphrey, a mason from the Parish of Glasgow, married Janet Bowman, from Ayr, in December 1825. Although there is no definite proof that this was the same Charles who was born in Ayr, there is his trade and the fact that Janet was from Ayr. Together they emigrated with their family to Canada around 1831; their sons James, Charles and Andrew Bowman were born in Scotland, and Jannet, Agness and Sophia were born in PEI. Another son, David, was born on the Island.

In the 1861 census, there were five in the household in Lot 19. Since all of the older sons were married, the one male between the ages of 16-21 could be David Humphrey, Charles Sr., one female between 6-16, Sophia; one between 21-45, Agnes or Jannet; and one between 45-60 (probably Jannet, although she was 64). All 5 were listed as being members of the Presbyterian Church. 26 years of their 999 year lease had expired by 1861. Two members of the household had been born in Scotland and three on the Island. One member of the household was deemed to be insane.

The death notice for Charles Humphreys stated that he was a native of Mauchlin, Ayr. Humphreys Charles (The Summerside Journal, 12 Nov. 1868) d. Kensington [Lot 19], 8 Nov. 1868, aged 67 years, a native of Mauchlin, Ayrshire, emigrated in 1831.
