Pages from the Past

Humphrey and Isabella Fullerton MacLaurin arrived in
eastern North America around 1834 from Kilcreggan (near
Greenoch), Scodand with at least five of their eight children.
By 1846, they had acquired what was known as the "Ferry
Farm" on Grand River in Lot 16. This they purchased from
James Yeo by building a ship. Humphrey was a shipbuilder
and carpenter as well as a farmer.
Their family, Robert(Anne Glover),
John (Jane MacLean),
Mary (Archibald Kennedy),
Margaret (Donald MacLean, Jane's brother, see
Laughlin MacLean),
Barbara (unwed),
Isabelle (Andrew MacGregor, see MacGregor History), and Peter (Mary
Milligan) are all buried in Lot 16 United Church Cemetery.
No records were found for a young child named James who
died. Robert and Anne's daughter, Annie (John Mac-
Donald) was the first treasurer of the Lot 16 WMS.
Their son Peter, who married Mary Milligan, daughter
of Robert, the Presbyterian elder and builder of the first
sanctuary on the present site, is the direct ancestor of the
MacLarens who stayed in Lot 16. Peter and Mary had nine
children, three of whom remained in Lot 16.
