Mary Ann and Alexander were said to have had a daughter Margaret Jane, who would have been named for her grandmother and great-grandmother. There was no child of this name for this couple in the PEI Baptismal Index. The 1861 census did not rule out a daughter born around 1852.

She was not the Margaret Jane Gillis, born in 1851, who married Hugh Dunphy.

There was also a Margaret (Gillis) married to James S. Gillis in Grand River in the 1890 Catholic census, both age 37. She was Margie J. in the 1891 census. At that time, they had no children.

James' mother Margaret was the head of the household in the 1901 census, living with one unmarried daughter. There is a gravestone in St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Grand River with James S. Gillis (d. 1896 at age 43), sisters Christy (1893) and Flora (1893); parents Stephen and Margaret (d. 1903)

There was also a Margaret Jane Gillis who married James McDonald, in 1875, and died in 1916 in Connecticut. She had been living in New Haven for about 40 years at the time of her death - her husband pre-deceased her.
