In the 1901 census, there is a Bessie Laird living in Charlottetown as a boarder. In the 1906 census of the western provinces, there is a Bessie Laird, b. 1884 in Prince Edward Island, living in Portage, Manitoba. In both census records she is living in lodgings and is on her own.
At the age of 25, Bessie Jane Laird married James Clarke Dobson in Nelson, British Columbia in 1909, and had at least two daughters: Jean born in 1910 and Grace Laird in 1912, and one son David Laird Dobson (1920-1975).
In the 1911 Canadian Census. Bessie was living in Kamloops, B.C. with her husband, daughter Jean, and a number of boarders.
Dobson - Passed away Thursday Oct 26 1944, Bessie Jane, beloved wife of James C. Dobson, 1144 Semlin Dr. in her 61st year. She leaves to mourn besides her husband 6 daughters, Mrs A. J. McLuckie, Mrs F. W. Head (Grace), Mrs E. F, Jeffs, Mrs E. L. Goodrich, Bessie, all of Vancouver, Mrs G. A. Nichol, Kamloops; 1 son Pvt. David, RCASC; 6 grandchildren and 6 nieces.
