THOMAS PICKERING, (1790-1868) was the third son of William I and Janet Anderson
Pickering. Thomas Pickering married his first cousin, Mary Marks, a sister of his brother,
James's wife. They lived at New London Ponds {Sea View}, on the farm currently occupied by
their great-grandson, Roland Pickering. Although a successful farmer, Thomas was as involved
as his brothers with shipbuilding. In the shipping records of this time, Thomas was listed as a
mariner. He was most often a partner of his brothers, James and/or William.
Two vessels Thomas was co-owner of were: 1. Mary - 48 T. schooner; and Two Brothers - 113
T schooner. It seems this was not enough to keep Thomas busy though, as he also operated a
grist mill. Thomas and Mary are buried in Yankee Hill Cemetery, French River. They had a
family of eleven children: Jane, Margaret, Ann, James, William IV, Anthony David, Rebecca,
Mary, Thomas, Helen Catherine and Robert.
