My Family Tree

Andrew N. Ramsay wasn't in the PEI Baptismal Index. A Ramsay family tree on the Island Register says that he was Andrew Nelson Ramsay, son of Donald Ramsay and May (or Marie) Cannon. One of the only clues we have about Andrew's family is that his grandson, another Andrew Ramsay, lived with Charlotte Anderson Ramsay for a number of years, and was either a [great] nephew or a cousin. (Andrew the grandson also lived with Samuel McArthur and his wife Lilly Taylor - both of them had mothers who were Ramsays)

Andrew couldn't be the son of Donald Ramsay and Maria Grant, because he married their daughter Maria in 1847. The Presbyterian minister was William McGregor, and witnesses were Donald Ramsay and two John Ramsays.

Gven the names they gave their children, and the two John Ramsays present at his marriage, I would have expected Andrew's father to be John or Neil/Cornelius - Andrew and Maria didn't name a son Donald, or a daughter Mary, but they seem to have departed from traditional naming practices!

There was a name that looked like Andrew Ramsay in the 1861 census in Lot 13, a household of 9. There were two males and 2 females under 5 (Robert, John, Addie and Nancy); 2 males and 2 females between 6-15, (Barbara, Isaac, Cornelius, and ?) and a man and woman in the 21-45 category. If there was another daughter, she died before Andrew.

Will of Andrew Ramsay of Mount Pleasant Lib 11, page 549, 1887, named his widow Maria and children Barbara, Isaac, Cornelius, John Archibald, Adeline, Susan, and Robert, youngest daughter Martha, and daughter Nancy who was his executor. Samuel Ramsay, Maria's brother, was a witness.

It is assumed that all Prince County Ramsays are related, but finding out how can be difficult!
