John was born in North St. Eleanor's, the son of the late John Ramsay and Coy McKay. He and his brother Hugh were shipbuilders. John's first marriage was to Agnes Ramsay.

At St. Eleanor’s, on Wednesday 7th inst., by the Rev. J.M. MacLeod, Mr. John Ramsay, to Miss Agnes, eldest daughter of Mr. Charles Ramsay, all of Lot 17.

Agnes died in 1866. "On Thursday morning after a short and severe illness, in the 31st year of her age, Agnes, the beloved wife of Mr. John Ramsay, ship builder, of Summerside, leaving a disconsolate husband and 4 children to mourn the loss of an affectionate wife and mother." John was survived by his widow, Grace, and five daughters and five sons: Mrs. Robert Head, (Margaret) Mrs. G.H. Tomkins, California; Mrs. James W. Saunders, Cambridge, Mass.; Agnes, a teacher in the High School, Summerside; and Bertha at home; Norman, John A., Goodwill in California; Archibald, Montana and Arthur, Spokane, Wash.

One brother George Ramsay, of Melrose, Mass., and two sisters, Mary also of Melrose, and Mrs. Chapelle, Summerside
