Note

This part of the McArthur family is a work in progress. It is recommended that you do your own research!

The history of Lot 4 says that this James McArthur was the son of Hugh Sr. To be Hugh's son, James would have to have been born earlier, around 1781. Another possibility is that he was from Lot 14, the son of Alexander McArthur and Catherine McKay.

Catherine McKay McArthur's gravestone said she was survived by 9 children. Gravestone in Oyster Point - "Sacred to the memory of Catherine McArthur, wife of Alexander McArthur, who departed this life 27th of December 1807, age 37 years. Leaving a husband and 9 children."

There was a will for an Alexander McArthur, Lot 14, signed on 9 July 1839 but proved in 1870 - it seemed to be attached to the will of a younger Alexander McArthur, also of Lot 14. Named in this will, in this order, were Dugald, Hugh, James, Alexander, Archibald, Robert, Mary, Jane, Flora, Elizabeth, and Neil. Most of the children received one shilling, and Neil (Neile) inherited the farm. George and Thomas Lee were executors. PEI Probate Records, Wills not recorded," A-M, McA (misc. dates between 1786?-1930?), on familysearch.org.

Assuming that Alexander named his sons in order, James would have been born after Dugald (1790) and before Archibald (1803) in Lot 14.

James McArthur married Marion or Miriam Smith before 1821.

There was one James McArthur in the 1841 census of PEI, in Lot 12. All were natives of the Island, and all were Presbyterians.

There was one male under 16, one between 16-45, and one 45-60. There were two females under 16, and 2 between 16-45.

In the 1861 census, there was a James McArthur in Lot 12 who was over 60. There was only one married couple and some younger children, but no older woman. Either James married again and had a second family, or he was a widower living with a married child and grandchildren.

This could be him - both he and Ellen were widowers:

Next to the older James there was an entry for a second James McArthur, a younger married man with children. Also in Lot 12 in 1861 were Neil McArthur, and Nathaniel McArthur.
