Narrative

There are no baptismal records for the children of John Ramsay and Margaret Penman. This name came from another family tree, but has not been verified. However, since George Penman's wife was named Mary, and it was one of the most common names for girls at the time, it would have been more unusual for John and Margaret not to have had a daughter named Mary.

The History of Port Hill, Launched, says that the daughter who married an Anderson was named Margaret Penman Ramsay.

Anderson family trees, and the History of Stanley Bridge, say that it was a Mary Ramsay who married Robert Anderson, and this was the name of Robert's wife on their gravestones, and in the 1881 census. Given Scottish naming patterns, it would have been more likely that a daughter was named Mary after her paternal grandmother, than after her mother. Children were named after their parents only after all four grandparents and brothers and sisters had been honoured.

Robert Anderson was in Lot 22 in 1861, with a household of 11, all Islanders and all Presbyterians. There was a couple over 60. Next to Robert was his younger brother, Charles Anderson.

In 1881, in Lot 22:
Robert Anderson 87
Mary Anderson 83
James Anderson 42
Euphemia Anderson 37 (James' wife)
Margret Anderson 43
Mary E Anderson 7
Robert J Anderson 3
