Dougald's obituary links him with the family of Duncan McDougall and Barbara Stewart, born on Prince Edward Island.

Dougald McDougall and Mary McMicken were married in 1849. The minister was Robert Patterson, and one witness was John Milligan. From census records, Mary was born in Scotland. There were no records for this family in the PEI Baptismal Index. Dougald's obituary said that he was survived by seven sons and one daughter. A daughter named Mary Jane died in 1859, so they must have named a second daughter Mary Jane.

In the 1861 census of Lot 18, Dougald was living next to Duncan. He had a household of 8: 1 male (Harry) and one female (Mary Jane 2) under 5; 3 boys between 5-15 (James, Robert, ?).

In 1881, Dugald and his wife Mary (b. Scotland) were living in Summerside PEI with sons William 19, and Charles, 13. In 1891, they were in New Brunswick with their daughter and son in law, Mary Jane and John Heffer.

Other sons can be traced through their relationship with the family of Thomas Heffer of Kings County, NB:
Mary Jane Heffer and her brother Charles S McDougall visited their ailing parents on the Island in 1890; Mary Jane provided a home to her parents, and her death record gives her parent's names as Dougald and Mary McMicken of PEI.

Robert Newton McDougall married Edith Heffer, and his death record in Nova Scotia gave his parent's names as Donald McDougald, from PEI and Mary McMicken from Scotland.
George B. McDougall was living with the family of Thomas Heffer in 1881, and married Charlotte Heffer
Harry Stewart McDougall was living with Albert McDougall in 1881, and married Eliza Heffer.
James Albert McDougall married Thomas Heffer's step-daughter, Margaret Wallace. His parents were Dougald and Mary on the record for his second marriage.
