Ramsay, Archibald

Birth Name Ramsay, Archibald
Gender male
Age at Death about 59 years, 4 months, 4 days

Narrative

NO FIRM PROOF THAT HE BELONGS WITH THIS BRANCH.

Archibald's date of birth and his residence at the time of his marriage fit with the family of Donald Ramsay and Maria Cannon. However, he would also fit as the youngest son of John Ramsay and Margaret Penman. Both families might be expected to have had named a son Archibald.

Witnesses at his marriage to Sarah Ramsay were Hector McDougall and John Ramsay and the marriage was performed by Wm. McGregor, Richmond Bay Presbyterian Church. The marriage bond for Archibald Ramsay and Sarah Ramsay said that one of the bondsmen was Frederick Cannon, which is another reason for placing him with Donald Ramsay and Marie Cannon. Note that this is by no means a complete proof, that Archibald was their son.

Of the three men named Archibald Ramsay in the 1861 census of PEI, the one that fits best is the Archibald in Lot 11, a blacksmith, with a household consisting of one male between 5-15, 3 females between 5-15, and a married couple. On this census, Archibald indicated that there had been one birth and one death in the previous year - since there was no child under 5 in their househld, I am assuming that an infant died the year he or she was born.

This might have been him - there was another Archibald Ramsay in Lot 11.

Since Sarah Ramsay was a widow, in O'Leary Station in 1881, this is likely Archibald:

Archibald Ramsay, Death The Examiner 7 June 1875, page 2
Archibald Ramsay, O'Leary Station, of a ? sore throat, in the 58th year of his age. Island Argus, 15 June 1875 page 3 (transcribed in the PEI Master Name Index, unable to get a good copy of the newspaper item, the print was too faint on the microfilm copy)

On Meacham's Atlas, Sarah was living on a small property, which would also fit with Archibald being a blacksmith rather than a farmer.

The newspaper notice matches the gravestone for Archibald in Freeland Presbyterian Cemetery Lot 11 who died May 5 1875, in his 58th year.
