William was the son of Donald McLean and Sarah Ellis.

William MacLean (b. 1851) married Catherine MacLean (b. 1852) of Lot 16 in 1878. William was a farmer and a sawmill operator. They had ten children:
-Mary Ann (1880) married Woodland Colwill
-Sarah Isabelle (1881) married Will MacLean of Ellis River. They had two children: Ada
and Hampton.
-Guy Hampton (1883) drowned in 1906.
-Rachel Edith (1884) married Prushia Lyle of Lot 16. They had two children: Violet and
Wilfred.
-William Wilfred (1887) married Jennie Carter, lived in Washington. They had two
children: Francis and Donald.
-Alfred Ernest (1888) married Lucy Burleigh. Their children: Cecil and Jean.
-Roy Fielding (1890) married Beatrice MacCallum and lived in Charlottetown. They had
five children: Sadie, Dorothy, Catherine, Olivene and Eleanor.
-Adah (1892) married Gordon Millar of Ellerslie. They had six children: Catherine, Peter,
Rachel, Janet, Beryl and Orval.
-Daniel Edison (1895) married Ina May Lewis, had no children and lived in New York.
-Catherine (1897) married James Phillips of Arlington and had three children: Chester
and twins, Arnold and Allison.
After Catherine's death, William married Lilian Monroe (1880), a school teacher. They had five
children:
-Cuthbert married Dorothy Worboy. They had two children: Douglas and Dianne.
-George Edmund Sydney, did not marry.
-William Clarence 1904-1917 (drowned in the river in Tyne Valley)
-Eric Victor, died young
-Marie Victoria married Frank Little, lived in Ontario, no children.

According to the obituary of his son Roy, William and Catherine had a family of 15 children. They can be found in the 1891 census under the name McLane.

Mr. MacLean died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gordon Miller, with whom he lived for the past few years. He was born near Northam where he made his home practically all his lifetime. Surviving are six sons and four daughters, namely: W.W. MacLean, Tacoma, Washington; Alfred E., Ellerslie; Roy F., Charlottetown; Daniel E., New York; Rev. Cuthbert MacLean, army chaplain in Ontario; and Edward Sidney, Winnipeg; Mrs. Prushia Lyle, Central Lot 16; Mrs. Gordon Miller, Ellerslie; Mrs. James Phillips, Arlington, Lot 16; and Victoria, a nurse in Toronto, Ontario; also two brothers, James E. MacLean, Northam, and Daniel MacLean, Tyne Valley, and three sisters: Mrs. Ritchie, Tyne Valley; Mrs. Thomas Adams, Lot 14; and Mrs. Henry Williams, Elmsdale, as well as the many grand and great-grandchildren.
