Notes

Note

According to the New Brunswick census of 1861, Mary Dyment was born in New Brunswick in 1857, the daughter of Moses Dyment and Maria Bryant. Her parents moved back to PEI before 1871, when she was young. She and some of her siblings often said they were born on the Island. She went to the United States after the 1881 census, and was not living with her parents at the time of the 1891 Canadian census.

Amos Carleton and Mary Diamond, daughter of Moses and Maria and born in PEI, were married in Massachusetts in 1888. Amos was a hairdresser/barber, born in Winterport Maine about 1864, the son of John and Asmath Carleton. It was a first marriage for both.

A Day family tree says they had 6 children, and I can account for 5 in Maine birth records: first, an unnamed child, then daughter Asenath, third, a stillborn daughter (their 4th child on the form), and finally, sons Amos Llewellen, and Henry. On daughter Asenath's birth record, it says she was their second child, and there was an unnamed daughter who was stillborn in 1894. The children were born in Winterport, Maine; Mary's place of birth was given as St. John, New Brunswick on the records, and Amos' occupation as barber, labourer, and stone cutter: these possibly should all have been barber or hair cutter. However, he may also have been working with his father, a stone-cutter.

Amos and Mary were married 13 years in 1900, and on the form stated that they had had 2 children (Aseneth and Llewellen), of whom two were living. Amos was a barber. In the 1910 census, Amos and Mary (age 50) were living with sons Llewellen (14) and Henry (9). They had been married for 22 years, and Mary said 3 children, of whom 3 were living. Mary gave her date of emigration as 1881. In the 1920 census, Mary's place of birth was given as Nova Scotia, and her age was 59. Her year of emigration was 1882. In both the 1910 and the 1920 census records, Amos gave his occupation as barber, and Mary as general nurse. After 1930, no children were living at home. Amos gave his age at the time of his first marriage as 24, and Mary 28. In 1940, Amos was 76 and Mary 80 - Mary might have changed her age over the years because she was older than her husband. They were living in Winterport Town, Waldo, Maine.

Mary's place of birth on these records was given as New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Maine, Canada...however, the Mary b. PEI who married Amos in 1888 must be the same Mary, b. Maine, who had been married to Amos for 13 years in the 1900 census, and 22 years in the 1910 census. This must be the same woman, born in New Brunswick, who was the mother of the children born between 1888 and 1900. Mary's other answers on the census questions from 1900-1940 are reasonably consistent otherwise with her being the same person.

Mary Carleton, wife of Amos, died in 1941 in Winterport Maine.
