In 1852, he married Mary Ann Metherall. They were married by a Justice of the Peace, Henry C. Green, who was in the St. Eleanor's area; Joseph Metherall and Samuel Gard were witnesses. They were both from Lot 16.

Their first two children died young.

He was in the 1861 census in Lot 16. In this census, 21 years had elapsed in his 100 year lease. There had been one death in the family in the past year. Three of the family members were natives of the Island, and one of England: Gilbert, Mary Ann, Eliza Ann and William Thomas.

He was still farming, according to the 1881 census, in Lot 5. The family members were Baptists.

Gilbert McArthur 55, Mary Ann 55, William T McArthur Charles McArthur 19 Albert 17 John 15 and Benjamine 1. Mary Ann was born in England, the rest of the family on Prince Edward Island.

According to the book Wandering Back "Gilbert MacArthur, Jr. (1824-1899), mill owner and farmer, at St. Eleanor's, Lot 17, in 1852 and later settled at Rosebank, Lot 5. He married MARY ANN METHERALL Bet. 20 - 29 September 1852 in St. Eleanor's, PEI, daughter of THOMAS METHERALL and ANN CRUE. She was born 20 January 1826 in Devon, England, and died 1905. They were the parents of Lizanne, William, Albert, Spurgeon, and Benjamin.

Mary Ann was a widow in the 1891 census, living with her son William:
