Dyment, Hannah Sarah 1a

Birth Name Dyment, Hannah Sarah 1b
Gender female
Age at Death less than 100 years

Narrative

A girl, age 18, is the first person listed after John and Margaret in the 1881 census in the household of John Dyment. However, if the age given is correct, she would have been born a few years before their marriage, and neither John nor Margaret were married before.

Her name has been transcribed as M. Sarah, but the actual record could be Hannah or H. Sarah.

There are several possibilities.
1. Her age was wrong, and she was their daughter.
2. She was a relative, but not a daughter. For instance, is it possible that this is actually Mary Elizabeth MacDougall, the daughter of Sarah Dyment and James McDougall? A bit of a stretch, perhaps.
3. She was a servant - but, usually, non-family members were listed last on census records, after family. Servants were usually identified as such. And her last name was Dyment.
4. She was adopted.
5. She was a member of Margaret's family, and the name Dyment is a mistake.
6. She is the daughter called Sarah, Harriet or Hannah found on a number of Dyment family trees.
7. Margaret had a daughter at age 15.

In any case, no further record of Hannah or Sarah could be found after 1881.

Daughters named Sarah and Hannah were in Jean Meggison's Dyment genealogy, but not Roger Dyment and Connie Ladner's. Jean wrote her history in collaboration with her mother, a direct descendant of John and Margaret. No sources are mentioned - for instance, a family bible.
