Narrative

Most sources agree with the marriage record for Hannah Ellis, which stated: Thomas Burns and Hannah Ellis were married by license at the residence of James Ellis Sen. Lot 13 on May 5 1864. Witnesses were Robert Douglas Ellis and James Ellis Sr.

The Islander May 1864: At the residence of the father of the bride, Lot 13, on Thursday, May 5, by the Rev. W.H. Swabey, Mr. Thomas Burns of Lot 13 to Hannah, fourth daughter of Mr. James Ellis, sen., of Lot 13.

The family of Thomas and Hannah was under Burns in Lot 6 the 1881 and 1891 censuses, although maps for that period show the name of the property under Thomas A. Brown. The gravestone for this couple is clearly under Brown, and that is the name of the family in the 1901 and 1911 census records. One birth record is under Burns, the other under Brown.

One child links the two names used by this family. Their son, George Charles, was baptized under the name BURNS, with date of birth July 11 1869, son of Thomas A. George Charles BROWN was buried in St. Lukes Church of England Cemetery, son of Thomas A. and Hanna, born July 11 1869, died June 28 1893.

In 1881 the Burns family in Lot 6 consisted of: Thomas (40) and Hannah (42), George (12), James (10), Josephine (9), William (5), Maud (8), Thomas (4)and Georganna (2). In 1891, Lot 6, Thomas (58), Hannah (50), Hattie E.(26), George (22), James (20), William (16), Thomas (14), Maud (12) and Georgina (11).

In the 1901 census, under BROWN, only son Thomas was living at home. Thomas and Hannah went to Massachusetts in 1908, where they were in 1910, living with their daughter Maud BROWN in Natick. By 1911, Hannah and Thomas were back on the Island, on their own. Their son James had also returned from Massachusetts.

The date of birth for Hannah Brown in the 1901 census matches that of Hannah P. Ellis, daughter of James and Marion, and matches the gravestone for Hannah Brown, wife of Thomas.

Marriage records for Hattie, James, and Thomas in Massachusetts were all under the name Brown, and Maud Marion Brown used that last name on census records and border crossing records, where she gave James Brown, her brother, as her PEI contact.

Grave of Thomas A. Brown, born Dec 14 1840, died April 1917
his wife Hannah born May 12 1839, died April 17 1912
in St. Lukes Anglican Church cemetery Lot 6-2

There was an Administration for Hannah which said she had a savings account with $206.20 in the Bank of N.S. in Summerside. Total assets about $400. which went to her husband.

A reason for the change in the family's name was provided in the book Preserving the Past. Parts of this story might be true, but perhaps the story was about an ancestor of Thomas'.
